Inventor estadounidense. Desde los 15 años tuvo que mantenerse por sus propios medios. En 1885 construyó su primera máquina calculadora; aunque resultó ser comercialmente poco práctica, patentó un modelo más conveniente en 1892. Esta máquina fue un éxito comercial, pero él falleció antes de que pudiera obtener provecho económico con ella. Un año antes de su muerte recibió la Medalla John Scott del Instituto Franklin. En 1905, la Burroughs Adding Machine Co. fue organizada como sucesora de la compañía que él inició.
William S. Burroughs era su nieto.

Yonki (1953), relata sus experiencias como heroinómano.
El almuerzo desnudo (
1959; película, 1991), su libro más conocido, aborda el tema de la homosexualidad y la persecución policial y satiriza con agudeza el grotesco mundo de los drogadictos. (
